Why Florida Dog Bite Accidents Are So Deadly Serious

According to Canine Journal, dogs bite children and adults because the dog is stressed, scared, feels threatened, or is ill. The dog may think he/she is protecting the owner, themselves, or even their puppies. Some dogs bite during play, which is a major reason children and dogs can be a dangerous mix. Children don’t see the risks in playing with a dog.

The Canine Journal also reported the following statistics:
  • About 4.5 million dog bites happen on an annual basis.
  • In 2016, 41 people died because of a dog bite. Of these fatalities:
    • Pit bulls caused 22 deaths, Labradors caused 3 fatalities, and Doberman Pinchers, German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, American Bulldogs, Rottweilers, and mixed-breed doges each were involved in 2 deaths.
    • Young children aged three to six, and children younger than nine, suffered a disproportionate number of deaths.
    • 18 of the deaths were adults 30 years or older.
  • Pit bulls and Rottweilers caused the most fatal dog attacks between 2005 and 2016
